Rîmetea, ”the village of white houses”

One of the most beautiful rural areas in Romania

The Rimetea-Colțești area amazes by the traditional Transylvanian blend and the impressive geography of the places.

Rîmetea, the ``white house village``, is the only Romanian village awarded the Europa Nostra Prize of the European Commission for the preservation of the material cultural heritage. With the oldest house built at the end of the seventeenth century, the village has 200 houses and traditional Transylvanian dwellings built between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Now renovated, but keeping intact the architecture and the spirit of the place, the houses are shelters for villagers and old customs for over a thousand years. In the center of the village, visit the Ethnographic Museum for a journey back in time: with a collection of over 11,000 pieces, its rooms tell the life stories of generations of inhabitants in the area and their occupations - mining, metallurgy and woodworking.

Popular folk art pieces in the area are housed in a small private museum, and the old village water mill dating from the 18th century is still occasionally used by locals. Ever since the 18th century, it dates back to the fortified Unitarian, restored church, but preserving the elements of local architecture and culture.

The village of Colţeşti, admired by the imposing Stone of the Szekler, offers unforgettable sights. One of them is the Cetatea (Citadel) of Trascăului, built at the end of the 13th century by Vice-voivode Thorotzkay. In the village, visit the Samuel Brassai - linguist and teacher, the member of the Academy in Budapest - the former Franciscan monastery (XVIII-XIXth century) and the Roman Catholic Church (eighteenth century).
